Its all about the base

Like a great song needs a great bass, the secret to a superb looking log cabin, shed
or timber building installation begins with the base. The great news is that when it comes to selecting a base there are many different options for you to choose from, which means that whatever your budget there is likely to be a base option out there for you. Over the years we have seen our customers use many types of base options from the traditional concrete to timber frames, railway sleepers, patio slabs and plastic ProBase all giving fantastic results.

The key to a successful base is that whatever you choose it must be firm, strong and perfectly flat and of course the right size for your chosen timber building. A great example of the need for a good foundation has to be the leaning Tower of Pisa, it makes a fabulous tourist attraction but wouldn’t be a good look for a log cabin.

Here at Cabins Unlimited the most popular base options are concrete and plastic ProBase. Concrete is probably the most common, it is certainly strong and durable. We usually recommend a 100mm (4inch) concrete base for the majority of our log cabins for sale.

ProBase is an interlocking plastic grid system that also makes a great base and is, often much cheaper than concrete and better for the environment too especially as its made from recycled plastics.   It is strong,  and  heavy duty , with tests showing  a crush rate of 190 tonnes per square metre but also lightweight and moveable.  The grid design also allows for air flow and drainage and can either be filled with small gravel or not depending on what you want.  Its a great versatile system that can be quickly and easily installed whether by yourself or a landscape gardener.

Here is a video showing just how quick and easy ProBase is to install.

ProBase can either be purchased alongside your log cabin or separately with more information available on our website here.  If you would like to discuss your base options with us please give us a call on 01362 470075
